Even with my afternoon nap, I was still tired. By the time I got off the phone with Hank, all I could think about was crawling back into bed. I made my way out of the pool area, meandering through the enchanting pathway and past the outdoor gas fireplace which was nestled in the corner of a seating area filled with deep, comfortable looking sofas. I nodded pleasantly at a couple enjoying a nightcap, then headed for the front desk to check, again, if any rooms had become available. Sadly, nothing. I thought about Margaretâs tractor-like snoring and the frigid icebox sheâd turned our room into, but as tired as I was, there was a chance I might not even notice.
âWell, well, well.â I turned around to find that same guy Iâd met yesterday, sitting by the elevator. âNow thereâs a sight for sore eyes,â he said. Despite his lecherous grin, I was flattered, but at the same time, a little put off since he had that unmistaken aura of a serial seducer. He was about to speak again when, thankfully, the elevator doors opened. I got in quickly and pushed the button for my floor, avoiding eye contact. I certainly didnât want to encourage him.
When I stepped out of the elevator, Zelda and Cameron were about to board. I recoiled, my eyes blinking rapidly while I took in Zeldaâs revealing outfit. Maybe it was a bit extreme of me to think, but she looked like sheâd just stepped off a New York street corner.
âOh, hey, Mrs. Montgomery,â Zelda exclaimed, her eyebrows rising in. âWe thought youâd still be with your mother.â
Be kind, Allie. âNo,â I said, looking at Cameron while he kept the elevator door from closing. âMargaret is, though. Theyâre playing cards with some of the residents.â
Cameron looked awfully dapper with his sun-kissed glow. âOh, thatâs great,â he said. âWeâre just going to check out this bar down the street. Thereâs supposed to be a live band tonight.â
âAh, okay,â was all I could manage. I had an overwhelming urge to unleash my inner âhelicopter-parentâ and ask if heâd eaten a proper dinner, how much heâd had to drink and how late they were planning on staying out. But I didnât. I didnât have the energy and I didnât want to embarrass him in front of Zelda.
âHave a good night, Mrs. Montgomery,â Zelda said, almost hesitantly.
I was suddenly seized by an irresistible impulse. âWhoâs Oliver?â I blurted out. My eyes jumped to Cameron then back to Zelda.
They stepped out into the hall, letting the elevator doors close behind them. Cameronâs head tilted slightly. âHow do you know about Oliver?â he drawled.
Zelda put her hand on Cameronâs arm. âHeâs just a friend from back home. Weâve known each other forâ¦for a while,â she added, her voice trailing off. Just then, Zelda pulled out her phone and let out a deep sigh. âIâm sorry,â she said, pressing the elevator button again. âBut I better take this.â And then, to my surprise, she stepped forward and gave me a hug.
